INTEGRATED STUDIES:
MOVE IT! – FORCES AT WORK. Grade 3/4D
5 E’s: Engage Explore Explain Elaborate Evaluate
The PrimaryConnections 5Es teaching and learning model is based on the theory that students learn best when they are allowed to work out explanations for themselves over time through a variety of learning experiences structured by the teacher. Students use their prior knowledge to make sense of these experiences and then make connections between new information and their prior knowledge. To help students make the connections between what they already know and new information, each PrimaryConnections unit uses five phases:
| ENGAGE | Capture the students’ interest and allow them to express what they know about the topic. | What makes things move? Why are some things harder/ easier to move than others? |
| EXPLORE | Hands-on activities to explore concepts and skills | Moving and attempting to move objects of various sizes and shapes on different surfaces.Observing things that are designed to move: eg toy cars, bikes, scooters, billy carts and various forms of wheeled transportation. |
| EXPLAIN | After children have explored the concept, the teacher provides relevant concepts/terms | Explain the forces involved with movement: eg. gravity, weight, friction, drag, propulsion Look at different types of propulsion. |
| ELABORATE | Provide opportunities for children to apply what they have learnt to deepen their understanding | Using ramps, rollers, wheels and other simple machines/ technologies to move objects. Labelling of diagrams to show understandings of forces involved with movement. Labelling a diagram of a bike to show the different parts. Looking at how the gears of a bike effect its movement. |
| EVALUATE | Students review and reflect on their learning and understandings of the unit | Reflective journal of learnings throughout the unit. Writing of science reports. Students rank various machines, technologies and forms of transport on the basis of simple – complex. |
